5Best all around general purpose athletic shoeJan 31, 2012
By D. George "Jinglebob"
I can honestly say this is the best shoe of this type I have ever owned. It's a great athletic shoe, a great hiker, a great work shoe. I have worn it for long walks, worn it on the tread mill, lifting weights, camping and general work. No tears, worn spots, loose soles, broken laces or stains. I forgot to say, it has saved me a few times crossing sheet ice on streets and side walks with it's fine tread. As I write this my Converse Mountainaire Trailhiker Oxford still looks good as new. It looks like they have another year of wear in them. I like this shoe so much that I just bought another pair to save for when I wear these out. You never know what's going to happen with cost and availability. I wear a size D14 and weight 228 pounds, it stands up. It's a D width but feels slightly larger. Plenty of room for sweat socks or heavy wool socks in the Winter. An inter sock and hiking sock should be no problem. Now for the rest of the story. It comes with round laces which I hate. They won't stay tied. I tie a double knot which works ok and holds most of the day if I tie it tight.
Why didn't I replace the laces with flat ones? Well you know. They are a good value and I highly recommend them.

3Could workSep 16, 2010
By Annie Oakley
I returned these because they were not the extra wide that I had ordered, and are not actually available, but they looked like they could have been a comfortable, light weight hiking shoe.
